My career began as a 5 year old multi-media artist! My mother (herself an artist) always encouraged me to make objects. The bug has stuck and decades later and several degrees & diplomas & traineeships and apprenticeships later, here I am still making and enjoying it.
I have been a gold & silversmith for a long time. It seems like I have been making for several lifetimes. Have trained here in Australia, also in Germany & Switzerland. I also have a Degree in Visual Arts Majoring in Jewellery & Objects from Sydney College of the Arts which is a part of The University of Sydney.
Had my own Gallery, "Schmuck (which is 'Jewelry' in German)- Objects of Desire" in Sydney's Darlinghurst for about 7 years.
Then OFCOURSE my daughter came along and I went on to make part-time only, living up North in beautiful Byron Bay. The city called us back and we moved back to Sydney when our daughter was about 2.
Inspiration comes from everywhere, but especially from flowers and plants and the ocean as I live very close to the sea. I am also a great fan of Japanese Design, especially 'Kamon' which are like family 'crests'... I love sawpiercing (cutting designs out of the metal). I am a metal fanatic and base most of my work around metals and tend not to use too many stones. A few pearls here and there and a few pieces with gems on occasion. Gold is avoided unless it is recycled as I disagree with the methods of mining gold.
I also teach several classes from beginners to advanced in jewelry making at my studio (Mettle Design Studio near Sydney's Clovelly Beach). Student's enthusiam also inspires me and keeps me researching for better ways of making and more approachable techniques.
I know I will be making pieces until my hands stop functioning.
